I am creating a website to sell discounted products at my site. I want to promote it and find affiliated companies, who are interesting in selling their products and services at my website. I also want to work with start-up companies to help them grow as I do. Question: What do you think about my project? IH, NY

The internet provides entrepreneurs with opportunities to reach global audiences and many companies are successful in doing exactly that. Because it is relatively easy to create a space on the web, it does not mean that one can be successful in selling products/services on-line.

Some issues to consider:

-> What is your market? Certain products are more suitable for the internet than others.
-> How do you plan to promote your web site? Creating a web site is rather easy. Developing traffic to your site takes time and it requires a plan.
-> You will be in the logistics business. Do you have a plan? Coordinating shipments and deliveries would be critical to your success.
-> Quality is key. How about quality assurance programs in selecting vendors and auditing them to make sure that their products are of high quality?
-> Would you inventory the products or you would rely on your vendors to keep adequate stock for your customers' needs?

Clearly, what I am suggesting here is that you start by developing a comprehensive business plan. Contact your local SCORE Branch and meet with one of our Counselors.
